Think you’re an HSP and need some tips? Do you have trouble settling down after being overstimulated? Do you require a lot of downtime after a hectic day? Or, maybe you find yourself having rich and complex feelings towards life events? You may be a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) who can benefit from some HSP tips!

A highly sensitive person is someone who has increased sensitivity to their environment, whether that is physical and/or emotional stimuli. It is a personality trait that has both strengths and weaknesses. For example, HSP often have trouble hanging out in loud environments, but also have a rich understanding of their emotions.

There is nothing wrong with you and you’re not alone, I am a HSP myself. It’s found in 20% of the population and affects both men and women. To learn more about this trait, click here.

Although it’s nothing to be ashamed of, being a HSP can sometimes be difficult. You may require some HSP tips to get you through the hard days. That’s why I compiled 8 HSP tips just for you, stemming from my own experiences!

Let’s work together!

Looking for a book to better understand yourself or others in your life that are HSP? Look here.

If you’re a Highly Sensitive Person you may:

  • Pick up on tiny differences or changes in people, situations, or surroundings
  • Find that you’re more in tune with your emotions than others seem to be
  • Notice that you’re more affected by stress than others around you and become easily frazzled and overwhelmed
  • Consider yourself creative
  • Have trouble with burnout
  • Experience deep empathy for others
  • Think you may be an HSP too? Check out this quiz here.

8 HSP tips/tasks you can work on:

1) Be aware of how you interact with non-HSPs. This can include your partner, certain family members, and/or friends.

2) Set up a routine in your life that feels right for you. Having structure in your life is so important. Try implementing and sticking to a morning routine and a night routine and see how you feel! Oftentimes, HSP thrive in routine activities.

3) Try to reframe your thoughts regarding your personality. Remind yourself that there is nothing wrong with you if you’re a HSP! It is simply part of your personality, the same way that traits like “talkative”, “artistic”, or “determined” are.

4) Challenge how you handle constructive criticism. Work on not overreacting to comments that are not meant with bad intent. This is certainly easier said than done and takes practice!

5) Be assertive with your needs. Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want and need. Perhaps this is a break from too much loud family time or canceling plans with friends.

6) Learn how you relax best when overstimulated. Try deep breathing or getting some fresh air.

7) Process big changes in life through reflection, conversation and journaling. Staying present and mindful throughout change is a great way to relax your mind.

8) Find great friendships/relationships that work with your sensitivity needs. Letting people know what being a HSP means and how they can help you feel more comfortable will help tremendously. If someone isn’t familiar with your needs, how will they make changes to meet them? You may also need to distance yourself from people that are toxic for you.
