So many couples I work with struggle with finances. There’s worries about not having enough, what to save for, and how to spend it.

These worries span every stage of a relationship from dating, engaged, married, divorcing, and blending families.

I often help these couples determine a monthly budget for their lifestyle and their priorities such as how often they go out to eat, their housing needs, and handling debt.

We work to figure out both short term and long term goals. We also make changes to the way we word concerns to our partners about debt and spending habits.

If couples need more help outside of a session, I recommend Dave Ramsey’s Complete Guide to Money.

This book gives you seven baby steps to handling your finances that build on one another.

Step 1. Put $1,000 in a beginner emergency fund

Step 2. Pay off all debt

Step 3. Put 3 to 6 months of expenses into savings

Step 4. Invest 15% of your household income into Roth IRAs

Step 5. Begin college funding for your kids (if you plan to have them)

Step 6. Pay off your home early

Step 7. Build wealth and give

The steps don’t happen over night, they take time. They cover topics like saving money, investing, paying off debt, and giving. I’m really impressed with the easy way this is all explained.

My favorite part is how Dave Ramsey explains there needs to be a change in behavior AND thought processes regarding money. This mentality connects to making changes to have healthy relationships as well.

Do you and your partner need make improvements to your finances? How could your communication with your partner about each other’s spending be done in a more gentle way?
