More Than Your Addiction: A Substance Use Therapy Group in Cumming, GA
Your Story Beyond Substance Use
An 8 Week Substance Use Process Group for Adults
Recovery is about so much more than stopping a behavior.
Substance use is often only one piece of a much bigger story. Underneath it, there may be anxiety, shame, loneliness, difficult relationships, past experiences, uncomfortable emotions, or simply a need to escape from something that feels too hard to sit with.
This group is a space to get curious about those pieces.
More Than Your Addiction is a small, supportive substance use therapy group in Cumming, GA for adults navigating substance use and recovery who want to better understand themselves, their patterns, and what they want their lives to look like moving forward. Offered by Sage Counseling and Wellness, it is an in-person, therapist-led group for adults in Cumming, Forsyth County, and the surrounding North Atlanta area.
You are more than your substance use, and we want to create space to explore the rest of your story.

Is This Addiction Therapy Group a Good Fit for You?
Maybe you have been in recovery for a while. Maybe you are just beginning to look at your relationship with substances. Or maybe you understand your behavior on the surface, but you keep wondering why you fall into the same patterns.
You might find yourself wondering:
- Why certain emotions are so difficult to sit with
- Why you pull away when people get close
- Why shame seems to follow you around
- Who you are without substances being such a big part of your story
You do not need to have all of that figured out before joining us. In fact, figuring some of it out together is the point.
What We Will Explore in This Recovery Support Group
This is not a class where you will sit and listen to someone lecture you about substance use.
This is a process group, which means the conversations, experiences, and relationships that develop in the room are an important part of the work. We will have a theme to help guide us each week, along with some education and opportunities to better understand what may be happening underneath our patterns.
Understanding Your Relationship With Substances
Over the eight weeks, we will explore your relationship with substances and the role they have played in your life. We will get curious about what happens underneath the urge to use and what emotions, needs, or experiences may be connected to it.
Shame, Identity, and Relationships
We will also talk about shame and the stories you have learned to tell yourself about who you are. Together, we will explore identity, values, relationships, trust, vulnerability, conflict, anger, avoidance, and the ways you may protect yourself when life or relationships feel uncomfortable.
Building a Life in Recovery You Actually Want
As the group progresses, we will also begin looking forward. Who are you becoming? What actually matters to you? What makes recovery worth it? What do you want your relationships to feel like? What would it look like to build a life that you actually want to be present for?
Because recovery is not only about asking, “What am I trying to stop doing?”
It is also about asking, “What am I trying to build?”
Nervous About Group Therapy? That Is Completely Normal
Walking into a room of people you do not know and talking about something personal can feel uncomfortable, especially in the beginning.
There is no expectation that you walk in on the first night ready to tell everyone your entire life story. You are encouraged to participate, ask questions, listen, take your time, and share at a pace that feels manageable. You can also pass when you are not ready to talk about something.
We want this to feel like a real conversation with real people. There will be room for difficult emotions, but there will also be room for connection, laughter, curiosity, and being human.
What a Typical Group Therapy Session Looks Like
Each group is 90 minutes and will begin with a check in to see what everyone is bringing into the room that day.
From there, we will introduce the week’s theme and offer some education around the topic before opening the conversation for discussion and group processing. This is where we have space to slow down, get curious, and explore what is coming up in the room.
Sometimes that might mean exploring one person’s experience more deeply. Other times, we may notice a common theme or pattern that several people are experiencing and allow the conversation to develop from there.
Toward the end of the group, we will slow things down and give everyone a chance to reflect on what they noticed, what stood out, and what they want to take with them into the week.
Frequently Asked Questions About Our Substance Use Group
What is a process group?
A process group is a type of group therapy where the conversations and connections between members are a big part of the healing. Instead of a lecture, you get a guided space to explore what is going on underneath your patterns with people who understand.
Is this the same as AA or a 12 step meeting?
No. More Than Your Addiction is a therapist-led process group, not a 12 step or peer-led meeting. You are welcome to join whether or not you currently attend other recovery support groups.
Do I have to share if I don’t want to?
Not at all. You can listen, ask questions, and share at your own pace. You can always pass.
How much does the group cost?
Each group session is $33, and the group meets for 8 weeks.
How do I join?
Start by booking a free 15 minute consultation. If it feels like a good fit, we will schedule an individual screening and intake before the group begins.
Interested, But Not Sure Yet?
The first step is simply a free 15 minute consultation. This gives you a chance to meet us, hear a little more about the group, tell us what you are looking for, and ask whatever questions you have.
If you are interested in moving forward after the consultation, we will schedule an individual screening and intake. This gives us more time to learn about you, your relationship with substances, the support you currently have, and what you are hoping to get out of the group.
It also gives all of us the opportunity to make sure this particular group feels like the right fit.
