It’s finally the new year! Hopefully, you had a restful and restorative holiday season full of quality time with your family and thinking of resolutions for 2025. If one of your New Year resolutions is to improve your fitness and exercise more, you’ve come to the right blog post. Getting back in shape after a fitness hiatus can be difficult, especially if you’re unsure about where to start in your fitness journey. However, with some help setting attainable goals and sticking to them, as well as some helpful products to help you exercise, this goal is more than possible. Keep reading to learn more!

How to Set Fitness Goals and Create a Routine

You likely have some high hopes for the new year. Perhaps you’re inspired by your friend who just hit their 100th pilates class. Maybe it’s a fitness influencer who makes you want to get back to the gym. Or, maybe you have some health concerns that can be improved by exercising regularly. Whatever the reason may be, following these steps can help you assess your goals and create a healthy workout routine that you can follow throughout the year:

  • Understand your “why.” Before you jump right into creating a routine, it is important to assess why getting fit is one of your goals. Is it for healthy reasons? Exercising is good for you, but the reason behind wanting to exercise more can actually be unhealthy. Check out this helpful guide:
    1. Positive “Why”s:
      1. You want to improve your mental health
      2. You want to better your physical health or mitigate a health concern
      3. You want to work toward something that will keep you motivated
      4. You want to get toned and see physical results in a healthy way
    2. Negative “Why”s:
      1. You’re insecure about your looks and want a “different” body
      2. You hope to fix all your issues by adopting a healthy habit
      3. You feel like nobody will accept or love you if you don’t get in better shape

Although exercise benefits everyone and can improve your mental and physical health [1], it is important that you want to exercise for healthy reasons, instead of attempting to “fix” yourself. No matter what shape you are, you don’t need to be “fixed”. You are worthy of love and care regardless! If you find that your “why”s are mostly negative, it will likely be helpful to speak to a mental health professional about the thoughts and feelings you are having, rather than relying solely on exercise.

  • Do some research. Everyone’s fitness goals are different. Perhaps you want to focus on your arms and back. Maybe you want to get back to a healthy weight. Or, maybe you don’t care about results and just want to feel energized. Whatever your goals are, there is a fitness routine out there that will work well for you. Do some research online and find a routine that appeals to you and works with your environment (ie, if you will be working out in a gym, at home, or outside.) Try out various routines and make note of which exercises work best for you!
  • Create a routine and schedule. Write it down. Once you have a list of exercises that work well for you, write them down in a notebook or on your phone. You can even start a new fitness journal for your resolution and track your progress! It can help to schedule workouts by writing specific routines on your calendar for certain days. For example, if you’re hoping to go to the gym 3 times a week in 2025, write down which muscles you want to work out on which days. This not only keeps you organized, but writing goals down often helps you actually achieve them [2].
  • Gather some friends to help. Exercising with friends who share your fitness goals can be fun and help hold you accountable to your routine! Whether you all go to the gym together or simply talk about your workouts and check in with one another, this can be a very helpful trick.
  • Be patient with yourself. Make sure the goals you are setting are realistic and that you are caring for your physical and mental health along the way. Be patient with yourself—most of the time, progress doesn’t come right away. It can take months to see any results. But, the most important thing is that you are putting in the work, staying consistent, and doing something that is bettering your health.

Top 10 Amazon Exercise Products:

Here are some amazing products that may help you out on your fitness journey!

  • Resistance Bands: Resistance bands can help increase tension and make certain workouts require more strength to complete. For example, doing lunges with resistance bands on your legs can make them harder, increasing the amount of strength it takes to complete the exercise. This allows you to strengthen your leg and glute muscles even more!
  • Yoga Dice: Yoga is a relaxing and fun way to workout, especially if you want to also focus on mindfulness. Whether you are new to yoga or a master of it, these yoga dice can help you come up with new moves and routines each day. Simply roll the dice on your yoga mat and follow the yoga pose!
  • Pre-Workout: Pre-workout powder is made to help you increase your energy levels and endurance, so you can stay focused and energized throughout your workout. Although a balanced diet allows you to have the energy levels needed to complete your workouts, some individuals like having pre-workout before vigorous exercise, especially if they only had a small breakfast beforehand. Make sure to assess whether pre-workout is right for you before taking it! [3]
  • Apple Watch: Smart watches can be super helpful for tracking your fitness goals. They track your steps, heart rate, time spent sitting vs standing, and other important factors when exercising. Having a smartwatch can help you become more aware of when you’ve been sitting for too long and should get up and exercise a bit. It’s also great for mindfulness check-ins and deep breathing for mental health improvement!
  • Blender Bottles: These shaker blender bottles can help dissolve protein powder or pre-workout powder into water. They are perfect for on-the-go, and can fit right into your gym bag.
  • Fitness Mat: This fitness mat is perfect for at-home exercises and pilates, as it is more comfortable than laying on the ground while working out. Simply roll it up if you’d like to travel with it or store it.
  • Water Bottle: Everyone needs to stay hydrated, especially if you are working out and losing a lot of your hydration through sweat. This water bottle is perfect for that. It’s large—a half gallon—and marks how much water you should be drinking by certain parts of the day. If you get sidetracked and forget to drink your water, this is the perfect bottle for you.
  • Portable Fan: Exercise will likely make you sweat, and depending on where you are, you may feel overheated. This portable fan fits into any gym bag and can help keep you cool during breaks between sets.
  • Makeup Removing Cloths: Perhaps you are going right from the office to the gym to fit in a quick workout. These makeup-removing cloths are perfect for washing your face on the go, so you don’t have to pack your cleanser and towel.
  • Yoga Pants: Comfy workout clothes are a must, no matter what kind of exercise you are doing. These yoga pants are perfect for yoga and other low-impact exercises, as well as for lounging during your time off from fitness!
