Happy June, and happy Pride Month! This month is a time to come together to celebrate and support the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual (LGBTQIA+) community, whether you are part of the community or an ally. Pride Month is not just about celebration, though. It is an acknowledgment of the importance of visibility, acceptance, and equal rights for individuals of all gender identities and sexual orientations. It is also a time to honor the immense struggle this community has gone through and continues to experience on a daily basis. In this era of progress, it is endlessly important that we understand the significance of Pride Month and actively participate in fostering an environment where everyone feels safe, loved, and empowered to be their authentic selves.

For many individuals in the LGBTQIA+ community, the journey to self-discovery, societal acceptance, and living authentically can be combined with challenges. This, of course, leads to an increased vulnerability to mental health issues. LGBTQIA+ individuals often face higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation due to the stigma, prejudice, and discrimination they encounter [1]. The importance of supporting mental health within the community cannot be overstated. Because of this, we have compiled a list of the top 10 LGBTQIA+ related resources, both for the community, allies of the community, and everyone who wishes to expand their knowledge on this population and celebrate pride month!

1. The Queer and Transgender Resilience Workbook: Skills for Navigating Sexual Orientation and Gender Expression by Anneliese A. Singh, PhD, LPC

This book is a resource that empowers individuals in the queer and transgender communities to build resilience and navigate the complexities of their identities, while acknowledging how difficult of an act this is. This comprehensive workbook offers practical exercises, affirming affirmations, and compassionate guidance to help readers explore and embrace their authentic selves.

2. The Self-Love Workbook: A Life-Changing Guide to Boost Self-Esteem, Recognize Your Worth and Find Genuine Happiness by Dr. Shainna Ali

This workbook designed to strengthen your sense of self and confidence may help those in this community in particular. Self-love is especially important for LGBTQIA+ individuals because it plays a vital role in fostering a positive sense of identity, belonging, and overall well-being. Embracing and accepting oneself allows LGBTQIA+ individuals to challenge societal biases and overcome internalized stigma, ultimately leading to improved mental health and self-esteem.

4. The Invisible Orientation: An Introduction to Asexuality by Julie Sondra Decker

Asexuality is often overlooked or forgotten in discussions about sexual orientation, leading to a lack of visibility and understanding for a significant portion of the population. Recognizing and acknowledging asexuality is crucial because it validates the experiences and identities of asexual individuals, helping them feel seen and heard in a society that often prioritizes sexual attraction. This book is all about this part of the community!

6. The Gender Quest Workbook: A Guide for Teens and Young Adults Exploring Gender Identity by Rylan Jay Testa, PhD, et al.

7. A Quick & Easy Guide to They/Them Pronouns by Archie Bongiovanni and Tristan Jimerson

This memoir is a powerful and necessary book that challenges societal norms and dismantles stereotypes surrounding Black Queer identity. Through their candid and introspective memoir, the author shares personal experiences and reflections on growing up as a Queer Black individual, offering insight into intersectionality and the complexities of identity. This book is perfect for anyone in the community and anyone who would like to learn more about intersectionality of identities.

9. Out by John Sovec

This book is a guide for parents of children who have recently come out as part of the community on how to support them throughout this journey and beyond. It includes chapters on terminology, proper and respectful communication, the process of acceptance, and more!

10. Queer Body Power: Finding Your Body Positivity by Essie Dennis

This book centers around the body positivity journey specifically for the queer community. Hopefully one or more of these resources resonate with you, whether you are part of the community, supporting a friend or family member in the community, or simply want to learn more and become a better ally. It’s never too late to explore your sexuality, educate yourself on identities other than your own, and celebrate the numerous, diverse, and beautiful sexual identities out there. Happy Pride!
